Message from the Governing Mayor of Berlin,
Gendarmenmarkt is considered one of the most beautiful squares in Germany, while some hail it as one of the most beautiful in Europe. But in my opinion, Gendarmenmarkt’s visitors need no superlatives. Either way, this striking square is a very special attraction and a “must” for most of our visitors. An architectural ensemble of historic buildings, the Deutscher Dom (German Cathedral), the Französischer Dom (French Cathedral), and the Konzerthaus, the concert hall designed by Schinkel, makes a stunning backdrop for a stroll. And the festive Christmas market opening just in time for the Advent season lends Gendarmenmarkt a magic of its own.
The WeihnachtsZauber Gendarmenmarkt has long since become one of Berlin’s most popular winter attractions, drawing more than 600,000 visitors each year. Around half of these visitors are from other parts of Germany or from abroad, showing that this Christmas market is a standout even for non-Berliners.
My sincere thanks go to all those who stand for the WeihnachtsZauber Gendarmenmarkt and are making it an unforgettable experience this year, too – especially the organizers and their cooperation partners, the roughly 150 artisans, restaurateurs, and caterers with stands at the market, and the performers who put on a captivating stage show every day.
With all that in mind, I would like to welcome all of the visitors to the 17th WeihnachtsZauber Gendarmenmarkt and to wish you a wonderful time here, a peaceful Advent season, and a very merry Christmas.
Governing Mayor of Berlin
